  • It is a way to market yourself on paper and stand out
  • It helps you get your foot in the door for a job interview

Include Contact Information
  • Contact Information
    • Name
    • Address
    • Phone number
    • Email (if appropriate)

Include Career Goals
  • Career Goal
    • A general statement about your skills and the job you are applying for


    • Example: To obtain a position in early childhood education.

Include Your Education Information
  • Education
    • Where did you graduate from?


    • Example: Spaulding High School, 2007.
    • High School Diploma

Include Related Courses You’ve Taken
  • Related Courses
    • If your objective is to obtain a position in Early Childhood Education, you would list courses you have taken which relate to ECE.
      • Related courses: ECE I & II, Child Development, Exploring Childhood, and Psychology/Sociology
      • You should include related courses in the education portion of your resume

Include Your Skills and Abilities
  • Skills and Abilities
    • A list of what you can do well and your strengths
      • Examples:
        • Excellent writing skills
        • Strong communication skills
        • Outgoing and personable
        • Proficient in Microsoft Office
        • Effective organizational skills
        • Self-motivated

Include Your Work History
  • Work History
    • Starting with the most recent job, include:
      • Position title
      • Name of company
      • Month/year you began and ended working
    • Write a brief summary of what your job responsibilities included

Include Your Awards and Accomplishments
  • Awards and Accomplishments
    • Any clubs, organizations, honor societies, sports teams, student of the term
    • Honor roll
    • Certificates (example: ECE Completer or Auto Program Completer)

Include Your References
  • References
    • 2 options
      • References available upon request- if you choose to do this, make sure you have a list of references to bring with you to a job interview in case you are asked- you want to be prepared!!!
      • Listing 3 references (not immediate family members)- name, phone, position and company. Be sure to ask them if they will allow you to put them down as a reference.

What Things Should I Avoid in My Resume?
  • Poor organization
  • The use of “I”
  • Misspelled words
  • Typos and abbreviations
  • Writing in paragraph form
  • Inconsistent font type
  • Salary requirements
