No pupil who has failed to pass four units
of work during the school's previous ranking period shall
represent the school in any interscholastic contest. A minimum
of four units of work per marking period is required for participation
in interscholastic athletics. (A unit of work reflects a course
that meets the equivalent of five times per week.) See the Athletic
Director for clarification.
Division I and II College Sports
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
Many college sports are regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), an organization founded in 1906 that has established
rules on eligibility, recruiting, and financial aid. The NCAA
has three membership divisions--Division I, Division II, and Division
III. Institutions are members of one or another division according
to the size and scope of their athletic programs and whether they
provide athletic scholarships.
Prospective student-athletes who are planning to enroll in
college as freshman during the 2001-02 academic year or thereafter,
and wish to participate in Division I or Division II sports must
be certified by the Clearinghouse.
To be certified by the clearinghouse, students must:
1. Graduate from high school
2. Earn a grade point average of at least 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale)
in a core curriculum of at least 13 academic courses, including
at least:
- 4 years of English Div. I, 3yrs. Div. II
- 2 years of math (algebra &geometry)
- 2 years of social studies
- 2 years of natural or physical science (including at least
one lab class)
- 1 year additional English, math, or Sci. Div. I, 2 years
Div II
- 2 years of additional academics courses. These additional
courses may be in the academic areas listed above or can be
courses in foreign language, computer science, philosophy
or non-doctrinal religion.
Note: Not all courses offered in these subject areas are
acceptable. The school's
Form 48-H lists all courses
approved by the Clearinghouse.
3. Earn a composite score of at least17 on the ACT or combined
score of 820 on the recentered SAT.
Note: Div. I student athletes with a core GPA of 2.0 must
have a combined SAT score of 1010. Core GPA's up to a 2.5
have varying SAT score requirements. Those with a 2.5 or better
need an SAT score of 820.
Students who want to participate in Division I or Division II
sports should start the certification process early, usually by
the end of their junior year.
Students are encouraged to seek their counselor's advice
in planning a four year high school program that meets college
entrance requirements, as well as NCAA eligibility requirements.
