Mathematics

The goal of the Mathematics Department is to provide a complete, in-depth program of studies that best meets the needs of the individual student. Three programs accomplish this goal:

  1. Standards Based
  2. Enriched
  3. Honors

Note: Students planning to take Calculus in college are urged to elect Trigonometry and Advanced Math. Refer to the Math Flow Chart to see course sequences.

Standards Based math courses are intended for students who desire to attend a two-year technical college or a four-year college in a non-math related field. Eighth graders that have successfully completed MathScape Book 3 and with a RIT score of 215-230 are advised to elect Math Conn 1A & Math Conn 1B as ninth graders. Students may elect Trigonometry or Math Conn 3B after the successful completion of Math Conn 3A. Students with a RIT score below 215 that are not ready for Math Conn 1A as ninth graders may be recommended to take Math Fund A and Math Fund B by their eighth grade math teacher. Math Conn 3A is accepted by UNH as meeting their minimum math requirement for acceptance.

Enriched math courses are intended for students who plan to attend a college or university. Eighth graders that have successfully completed Algebra 1A ENR and with a RIT score of 230-240 are advised to elect Algebra 1B ENR & Geometry ENR as ninth graders. Successful completion of Running Start Calculus ENR in their senior year results in a NHCTC credit transferable to several colleges throughout the country that include UNH.

Honors math courses are intended for students who plan to attend a college or university and desire to take Advanced Placement Calculus as high school seniors. Eighth graders that have completed Algebra 1A ENR with an average of 95 and with a RIT score above 240 are advised to elect Algebra 1H & Geometry H as ninth graders. Students enrolled in both Trigonometry H and Advanced Math H are invited to join Mu Alpha Theta (national high school and junior college mathematics club).

Transitions: The mathematics department encourages transitions between levels to accommodate differing student abilities.

Level down: 70-76 in Alg 1A ENR to MC 1B; 70-76 in Alg 1B ENR to MC 2A; 70-76 in Geo ENR to MC 2B; 70-76 in Alg 2 ENR to MC 3A. Student failures are to adhere to school policy based on final average.

Level up: based on teacher recommendation.
Note: Students that do not meet the prerequisite for the next course in sequence and desire to stay in that sequence are advised to participate in Summer School to attain the prerequisite.
Please also note the SAT and NECAP tests through topics covered in Math Conn 3A or Algebra 2
