6th GRADE FAMILY and CONSUMER
SCIENCE EXPECTATIONS
Welcome to Family and Consumer Science class. During the next
18 weeks, you will be involved in a number of learning experiences,
covering several topics of study. The goal of the Rochester Middle
School Family and Consumer Science program is to prepare students
for family, work, and community life by providing opportunities
to gain knowledge and develop skills. In the sixth grade, FCS
focuses on fostering a positive self-concept through various activities
and strategies. Students explore their inherited and acquired
characteristics and construct a Me Bag that they share with their
classmates. Students discover the basics of hand sewing with the
construction of a pincushion. They then demonstrate their mastery
of skills as they create a fur project. Kitchen safety and food
sanitation, correct usage of kitchen equipment and the ability
to work cooperatively in the food’s lab as they prepare
food products are also emphasized.
For this class you will need a portfolio that will be provided
to you. If you lose or destroy it, you will need to replace it
at your own expense. All work, graded and non-graded assignments
(assignments that you are still working on) need to be kept in
your portfolio. This portfolio may not go home!! If you are absent
or have not finished an assignment, the unfinished assignment
may go home but the portfolio needs to remain in the classroom.
At the end of the semester, your portfolio and papers may be taken
home.
You will need to bring either a pencil or pen (blue or black,
please) and your Agenda Book to class with you each day.
Please take this sheet home and have a parent or guardian sign
it so that they will be aware of what Family and Consumer Science
is all about. If you have any question, please ask me. If your
parent or guardian has any questions please have them call me
at 332-4090 or write a note in your Agenda book.
