School-to-Career
Opportunities
Community Service: Students volunteer
their time to work on a project or provide a service which
meets a need in their community. By reaching out to help others,
students gain a sense of responsibility and increase self-esteem.
Informational Interviewing: Students can complete informational interviews as a class
assignment or as a resource for a project. This is a
great way for students to get current information regarding
almost any subject. Additionally, students will make
important contacts and practice their communication skills.
Industry
Tours: Classes
may visit local industries to observe work in process and
gain an understanding of all aspects of industry.
Job Shadows: Varying numbers of students may go out to a job site for several
hours or an entire day to observe a day in the life.
This can be a project, research method for a project, or extra
credit. We do need to plan a good deal in advance for
this activity so see me early on in the year.
Internships: A quarter, semester, year, or summer long program. Students
get hands-on experience in a career area of interest.
Working closely with a work supervisor and faculty advisor
students explore the “real world”. This program includes
journal writing, a quarterly project, and other duties as
assigned on an individual basis. The program is a privilege,
not a given. Students must be responsible and willing
to work to successfully complete an internship. It is
a wonderful experience for those willing to put in the effort.
Internships
may be paid or un-paid. Students that receive a passing
grade get credit at the rate of ½ credit per quarter, which
entails 67.5 hours of hands-on internship experience.
Co-operative
Education: Co-operative education is a work-based learning opportunity
for students enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE)
programs. They may earn credit by working in a field directly
related to the area that they are studying in their CTE program.
Co-op credit is granted on a semester basis and requires 135
work hours.
School-to-Career
activities allow students to gain insight into a wide-range
of potential careers.
