Small Wonders - Preschool Lab

High School Student Participation

The first year of the Early Childhood Education course can be taken as a Junior or Senior. Students are in the class for a block. (about 86 minutes) each day, all year long. Juniors who successfully complete this first year course and are still interested in pursuing a career dealing with the care and education of children, can take the second year of the course, ECE 2, which is also a block, all year long.

The children in the preschool will have the opportunity to meet and work with most of the high school
students in the program.

One group of the first year HS assistants are in class from about 9:05 -10:30 AM and another first year group from 12:45 -2:15PM. From October through February they will work with 7 or 8 of their peers in the preschool every other week, with both the Chipmunks and the Squirrels classes. During the second semester, the high school assistants will alternate between field sites in the community and Small Wonders. Some of the field sites include child care centers, Head Start, kindergartens, elementary schools and special needs programs.

The seniors in the second year of the Early Childhood Education courses are scheduled in the preschool in groups of 4 or 5 and are with the children from 10:35-11:45 AM. After preschool class is over they clean and organize the preschool room and prepare for the afternoon preschool class. They also rotate between community field sites and our preschool for the whole school year.
