Words of the Web
- Web Site....A site is a location on the World Wide Web.
Each Web Site contains a home page, which is the first document users see
when they enter the site. The site might also contain additional documents
and files. Each site is owned and managed by an individual, company or organization.
- Home Page....The main page of a web site. Typically, the
home page serves as an index or table of contents to other documents stored
at the site.
- Web Page.... A Document on the World Wide Web. Every web
page is identified by a unique URL (Uniform Resource Locator).
- URL....The abbreviation for Uniform Recourse Locator,
the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web.
An example would be http://rochesterschools.com/Allen/index.html
- Domain Name....The unique name that identifies an internet
site. For example, the domain name for Rochester Schools is rochesterschools.com.
- World Wide Web....a system of internet servers that support
documents that are written in a scripting language called HTML (hypertext
markup language).
- HTML....Short for Hypertext Markup Language, the authoring
language used to create documents on the Word Wide Web.
- WYSIWYG HTML editors....What You See Is What You Get.
A program that generates HTML so that you do not need to know HTML to create
a web page. When you use them you see the page almost as it will appear in
a browser.(WYSIWYG). These do the work of coding HTML for you.
- Web Browser.....A browser is an application program that
provides a way to look at the internet with all the information on the World
Wide Web. Microsoft Internet Explorer and FireFox are the most widely used
browsers today. There are other browsers available, but the vast majority
of Internet users are not aware of them.
- Image.....An image is a picture that has been created
or copied and stored in electronic form. There are Two graphic formats supported
across the web in different browsers, GIF and JPG or JPEG and PNG (not all
browsers support PNG.)
- JPG....or jpeg (pronounced JAY peg). (Joint Photographic
Experts Group). JPEG is most commonly mentioned as a format for image files.
JPEG format is preferred to the GIF format for photographed images as opposed
to line art or simple logo art.
- GIF....pronounced either jif or gif stands for (Graphic
Interchange Format)—A common format for image files, especially suitable
for images that contain large areas of the same color. GIF format files of
simple images are often smaller than the same file would be if stored in JPEG
format, but GIF format does not store photographic images as well as JPEG.
- Animated GIF....an image that moves.. Do not use too may
animated gifs on one page. It is very annoying and not considered good netiquette.
- Hyperlink....A piece of text or image on a web page that
takes you to another part of the page, another page or a different web site.
- Link....short for hyperlink.
- FTP....(File Transfer Protocol). A very common method
of moving files between two Internet sites.
- Server....A computer on any network used to store information
that can be retrieved. For example on the Internet web servers store web pages
and files for you to access.
- Alignment....The position of an image or text on the horizontal
(usually) or vertical axis. Default is left .
