Tony Hoffman, a passionate advocate and speaker on substance misuse prevention, delivered a powerful and engaging presentation to 9th-12th graders from Spaulding High School and Bud Carlson Academy, as well as Rochester Middle School’s 8th Grade class. The presentations resonated deeply with both students and faculty. Through his lived experience and personal storytelling, Hoffman addressed the challenges of substance misuse while offering hope and actionable steps for prevention and overcoming obstacles.
Hoffman’s talk, which was part of the District’s ongoing commitment to substance misuse prevention and intervention, emphasized the importance of making informed choices and building resilience in the face of peer pressure and adversity. His dynamic approach combined real-life stories, research-based insights, and practical advice, creating an interactive and impactful experience for all in attendance.
A sophomore at Spaulding High School shared, “It was amazing to listen to how he was able to overcome his addiction, and can now share with others how to navigate life as a teenager. It was very impactful to hear what got him through his anxiety, especially as a teenager with anxiety. It was very helpful to hear what tools he found helpful in finding his footing coming out of prison. Hearing a perspective such as his was also amazing to be able to understand why some people make the decision they do. Getting to hear his tools, perspective, and life story will stick with me for a very long time. Having a speaker like Hoffman is a great resource for teenagers trying to navigate life and their emotions. I hope he visits and speaks here again in the future!”
Hoffman’s visit is part of a broader initiative to provide students with the knowledge and support needed to make positive, healthy decisions. Following his presentation, students participated in a Q&A session, further exploring the themes of recovery, mental health, and the importance of community support.
“Substance misuse affects individuals and communities in profound ways, and I’m grateful for opportunities to speak with young people about making choices that will positively shape their futures,” Hoffman said. “It was inspiring to see so many students open up to me about the challenges they face. Through these conversations, we can collectively work toward a healthier, more informed community.”
The event also highlighted the school’s dedication to offering resources and support to students struggling with substance misuse. Tony Hoffman’s visit reinforced the school’s ongoing efforts to create a safe and supportive environment where students can thrive. Rochester Middle School Principal, Ryan Gilpatrick, highlighted the importance of connecting with middle school students early, when the challenges of early adolescence and peer pressure are still manageable,"Tony Hoffman made a masterful presentation to students and staff at RMS. He told his story of struggles with mental health and addiction. He emphasized the importance of setting goals and being disciplined as you work to accomplish those goals. His memorable, heartfelt story engaged the audience, offering a natural connection and excitement about Tony's message. He echoed the importance of finding a trusted adult if students are struggling with mental health or substance abuse. This is a message the RMS staff embrace as we continue to support students' needs."
