What is CKLA?
CKLA stands for Core Knowledge Language Arts and it's the core reading program adopted by the Rochester School District. Built on the Science of Reading, Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) sequences deep content knowledge with research-based foundational skills.
Amplify CKLA is a unique core curriculum for grades PreK–5 ELA that’s grounded in the Science of Reading and combines rich, diverse content knowledge in history, science, literature, and the arts with systematic research-based foundational skills instruction.

Amplify CKLA inspires curiosity and drives results, empowering all students with rich background knowledge. Knowledge topics include (but are not limited to): The Five Senses, Seasons and Weather, The Human Body, Insects, Taking care of the Earth, Presidents and American Symbols, Early Civilizations, Astronomy, Cycles in Nature, Greek Myths, Immigration, Animal Classification, Ecology, Poetry, Geology and much more!
In Kindergarten, First and Second Grade the Knowledge strand of the Core Knowledge Language Arts program is designed to help students build the background knowledge and vocabulary critical to listening and reading comprehension. Through introducing, presenting, and discussing read-alouds in each domain, teachers build students’ listening and reading comprehension and oral language skills.
