MTSS in Academics and Behavior

Using initials even when you are not texting is very popular, and the field of education is no
exception. We use MTSS to stand for Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports.
We commonly think of MTSS when talking about behavior. All students get instruction about
expectations, some need a little extra to be available for learning, and some need a lot of
support to be available for learning. We often use a pyramid as a visual so it’s easier to
understand.

We use the same concept in academics as well. From a reading perspective, everyone gets
core instruction (the green zone). Some kids may need extra help- maybe they have many
skills, but have trouble with a few components. At McClelland, we are fortunate enough to
have 5 reading interventionists this year so we can help a lot of students get the boost they
need. Some students need a greater level of assistance, so they may get it from their
teachers, the interventionists, or specialists. This pyramid follows the same principle.

You may hear your students talking about going to reading groups, and this is where that comes from. Students go to groups during the WIN (What I Need) block of the day so they are not missing any core classroom instruction.

We are using MTSS to help your child be more successful across domains using the
supports they need.
